The Allard Pierson Museum, part of the Department of Mediterranean Archaeology at the University of Amsterdam, houses a stimulating collection of Mediterranean antiquities and artefacts and is devoted to placing the sources of Western tradition and culture in an accessible historical perspective.

The display begins with the ancient Egyptians, featuring mummies, sarcophagi and funerary objects, as well as scale models of the pyramids of Giza and the temple of Edfu and a computer that transcribes visitor's names into hieroglyphs.
The Greek section details the early colonisation of Italy with its influence on Etruscan civilization and its later adaptation and absorption by the Romans. Since opening in 1934, the museum and its collection have grown considerably, moving location in 1976 and extending in 1994 to house the increasing number of gifts and loans.
